We're out of Google Play Music - everyone is now invited to switch to YouTube Music

Later in the year Google Play Music will shut down, and the company encourages users to move their playlists and libraries to YouTube Music with a simple click.

Η Google today released details about the collapse of Google Play Music and made a quick transfer button to YouTube Music for those who want to make the change.

In 2017, Google announced that at some point it would merge Google Play Music with its music service on YouTube, then known as YouTube Red. The move was intended to avoid confusion among its musicians, but it took almost three years for it to become a reality.

Google Play Music will close later this year. "For now, users will continue to have access to both services," Google said in a statement her post. "We want to make sure everyone has time to transfer their content and get used to YouTube Music, so we will provide several updates before users end their access to Google Play Music later this year."

The company says it has created an "effortless" way for users to transfer their music libraries and playlists to YouTube Music, hoping that Google Play Music supporters will not lose much.

Those who want to get started now can download the YouTube Music app to their phones and simply click a drag button in the app. The app will then upload your purchases, add songs and albums, playlists and basically all your preferences from your Google Play Music profile.

The process may take a few seconds or even a few days to complete, says Google, but once done, your preferences should appear in the YouTube Music app.

However, we have not yet located the transfer button in the YouTube Music application. Google says you can also start transferring through the site music.youtube.com/transfer. However, the page is currently telling some users that they will have to wait their turn.

"All Google Play Music users will soon receive an email with detailed instructions on how to start transferring the full history and content of Google Play Music, as well as podcasts, to the new app," the company added.

This includes billing information. "Members of Google Play Music Unlimited will automatically receive the corresponding level of YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium based on the level of benefits with their current subscription, at the same price," says Google.

For podcasts, the company wants users to try out the Google Podcasts app, which you can also use to transfer your podcast subscriptions to via this dedicated webpage.

One of the main reasons why users preferred to stay on Google Play Music instead of switching to YouTube Music is that Google Play Music allowed you to upload your own music files to the app while YouTube Music did not.

But that changed earlier this year when YouTube Music introduced a music upload feature, marking the end of Google Play Music. You can now add up to 100.000 personal tracks to your YouTube Music library, an increase of over 50.000 compared to Google Play Music.

In today's announcement, the company acknowledges that change can be difficult. However, Google says that YouTube Music offers some enhanced features over the old service, such as expanded playlists and a smart search feature designed to help you find new songs in the YouTube cloud library.
