Meta is no longer going to support it Lite Messenger – the basic version of its chat app for Android devices
Such as reports 9To5Google, the application Lite Messenger has already been removed from the Play Store by Google, but existing users can continue to download and use it for now. Opening the app, however, shows a full-screen prompt that says “use Messenger to continue chatting".
From the 18 Σεπτεμβρίου, it seems that the Lite Messenger will stop working and will be required the complete Messenger app to continue chatting on the platform using your Android device. However, no conversations will be lost when switching between apps.
Back in 2016, when Meta was still called Facebook, the app Lite Messenger was released for older Android devices that had limited storage and memory. It was designed to be light on resources, offered a basic set of features for chatting, and promised to work even on slow or unstable connections.
This combination proved to be a popular reason for using it – there were no unnecessary features and it worked everywhere. For comparison, the app Lite Messenger has a size of less than 10MB, while the main app Messenger is 54MB in size.
Seven years later even low-end Android devices have plenty of storage and memory to run apps like this. And Meta would understandably prefer to have just one Messenger app to maintain on Android, as well as give them a much wider range of in-app features (and ways to collect data on their users).
Earlier this year, Meta began expanding the number of Messenger users who communicate with end-to-end encryption enabled by default. Google also enabled end-to-end encryption in RCS group chats this month, and Microsoft rolled out chat BingAI in third party browsers last month.
