Quick Charge 5: It became official and promises to charge Smartphones from 0 to 100% in just 15 minutes

Three years after the last update in the 4+ version with the possibility of fast charging up to 100W, the Qualcomm presented the new one Quick Charge 5 today.

ΕMany Android Smartphone manufacturers have developed their own fast charging methods over the years, the standard Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) remains the most popular in the market.

Three years after latest version update 4+ with the possibility of fast charging up to 100wThe Qualcomm presented the new one Quick Charge 5 today. Promises more than 100w (without stating exactly how much), much higher charging speeds and cooler phones.

Η Qualcomm promises to be able to charge a device equipped with a battery in 4500mAh by 0 to 50% in about five minutes, and from 0 to 100% in just 15 minutes.

This automatically does the new thing QC 5 faster than its implementation OnePlus, but also the OPPO Warp Charge / VOOC, which charges a battery in 4510 mAh of OnePlus 8 on 50% in 20 minutes.

Η Qualcomm promises that the new standard will be against 10°C colder than QC 4+ (although this data is based on 2750mAh battery charging). As the charging circuits in the Smartphones are extremely sensitive to high temperatures, this could help extend the battery life by a few months on all Smartphones that follow Qualcomm's new fast charging standard.

To achieve these charging speeds, the QC 5 will allow OEM manufacturers to install two batteries in their phones that can be charged at the same time - that is, a 4500mAh battery will consist of two single cells at 2250mAh. This special arrangement of batteries will be able to give over 20V as input voltage to both batteries and total power above 100w.

The problem, though, is that this implementation can easily become more complicated, more expensive, and take up more space than a regular battery, but that seems to be the only way out. This is what Oppo does to me its own fast charging technology.

Compatibility

The Quick Charge 5 will be compatible with previous generations - a device with QC 2.0 or any USB PD compatible device can be safely charged with the new charger QC 5 by Qualcomm.

Although it has not been announced so far which new Smartphones will be equipped with the new QC 5, Qualcomm claims that we will see it in some Smartphones in the third quarter of 2020, as this technology is compatible with Snapdragon 865 and 865+ SoC

And of course from now on we will see more and more devices adopting the solution with the two individual battery cells.
