Qualcomm: Announces Snapdragon 730 and 730G at 8nm and Snapdragon 665 at 11nm

Today the Qualcomm announced two new chipsets: the Snapdragon 665 and Snapdragon 730 (which also has the version 730G, with 15% better graphics).

Snapdragon 665

ΟThe Snapdragon 665 appears to be intended as the successor to the Snapdragon 660. Compared to this, it is built to 11nm LPP, which means it should bring some improvements in battery life as well as some cost reduction.

Like its predecessor, the 665 has four Kryo 260 cores based on the ARM Cortex-A73 micro-architecture, but frequencies now reach up to 2GHz compared to 2,2 GHz on the 660. The four Kryo 260 cores are low (based on Cortex-A53) still operate at 1.8GHz.

There is also a big improvement in the graphics department, with the new Adreno 610 GPU and the Hexagon 686 DSP. The Snapdragon 665 uses the ISP Spectra 165, which supports up to a main camera at 48 MP, or dual sensors at 16 MP or even triple camera sensors (while the 660 supports a single sensor up to 24 MP). These are all differences.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SOC Specifications

  • Octa-Core - Quad 2GHz Kryo 260 (performance A73-based) + Quad 1.8GHz Kryo 260 (efficiency A53-based) CPUs

  • Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 + technology

Snapdragon 730 and 730G

ΣCompared to the 710 which it replaces, the Snapdragon 730 upgrades the two large CPU cores from the Kryo 360 (based on the ARM Cortex-A75) to the Kryo 470 (Cortex-A76), while maintaining the same maximum clock speed of 2,2, 55 GHz. The six "small" high-performance cores are still based on the Cortex-A1.8, but reach up to 100GHz now, 35MHz more than before. All of this must translate into a XNUMX% jump in CPU performance.

Also in the new 730 the GPU is the Adreno 618 (which promises 25% increased performance), the Hexagon 688 DSP and the Spectra 350 ISP, the latter of which can support up to a single main camera at 36 MP or a dual 22 MP and 720p camera for slo-motion video capture as well as Portrait video mode in 4K HDR.

The new DSP includes Qualcomm Tensor Accelerator modules for learning machines - these so far have features that have been downgraded to the top 8xx Snapdragon SoCs series.

The Snapdragon 730 is built with Samsung 8nm LPN process, which is currently the second best and - as it is a mid-range chipset in price, and that is impressive. The new process will bring some improvements in battery life compared to the Snapdragon 710 which was built in a 10nm process, but we will have to wait to see it in the new devices to see its true performance.

There will also be a Snapdragon 730G, which promises 15% better graphics performance compared to the 730, due to the use of higher clock speeds. All new chipsets are announced to be available in mid-2019.

Features of the Snapdragon 730G Mobile Platform:

  • Up to 15% faster graphics rendering over the Snapdragon 730 and up to 25% faster graphics rendering over the Snapdragon 710, featuring an overclocked Adreno 618 GPU
  • Qualcomm Technologies' in-house game studio has collaborated with popular game-makers to optimize Snapdragon 730G for a selection of the world's top-rated games.
