Caution: How to protect yourself from JNEC malware

The attention of the citizens is drawn to the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate of the Hellenic Police Headquarters regarding the appearance - at an international level - of a new version of malicious redemptive software "Ransomware – Cryptoware"Under the name"JNEC».

Η new version of Ransomware is of great interest, on the one hand in terms of how to deceive potential victims and on the other hand in how to obtain the decryption key.

That particular malware JNEC exploits security vulnerabilities in older versions of widely used file compression / decompression software by infecting information systems by sending e-mail messages containing malicious attachments, especially "fake" photos of women.

After installing the redemption software on the information system:

- the set of files it locates is encrypted

-re Payment of "ransom" is required to provide the decryption key in the form of cryptocurrencies

-inks the user to create a specific email address to receive the decryption key

How to protect yourself


In this context, internet users and network administrators are urged to be very careful, to take digital protection and security measures to avoid being attacked by malware, as well as not to pay the required "ransom" in order to be discouraged. such illegal practices and to prevent further spread of the phenomenon.

Specifically, internet users and / or network administrators are invited:

To make backup copies of the files (backup) at regular intervals, on an external storage medium, which must be kept offline, so that in case of infection they can be restored.

In case they receive emails from unknown senders or unknown origin, do not open the links and do not download attachments, contained in these messages, for which they do not know for sure the sender and the content of the attached file .
Always check and install the updated (UptoDate) version of their operating system.

Use genuine software programs, updated to the latest version and always keep their computer program protected from malware.

It is noted that, for cases of Ransomware - Cryptoware malware infections, EUROPOL and the European Cybercrime Center (EC3) have launched the website https://www.nomoreransom.org, where citizens can find protection tips as well as decryption keys for some of the malware.
