Motorola: Confirms that it is designing a smartphone with a foldable screen

Motorola confirms that it is working on the design of a smartphone with a foldable screen, but based on a retro design of the past.

ΠIn an interview with Engadget, Dan Dery, Motorola vice president and head of Global Product, confirmed that the company was planning a "smart" mobile phone based on foldable screen technology.

In fact, in his statement, the Motorola executive confirmed an earlier publication in the Wall Street Journal that claimed that the company would try through the new technology to revive one of the most popular models in its history, the Motorola RAZR.

In his interview Dan Dery did not go into all the details of the future device but shed enough light on what to expect. First of all, it seems that Motorola will be slightly different from the competition (Samsung and Huawei) as its own folding will not have an external screen. According to Dery, an external display on a foldable smartphone could easily lead to damage, which of course no user wants. Instead, Motorola seems to be focusing on keeping the screen inside, while following design lines similar to the old RAZR.

It is worth noting that Motorola has already filed a patent application where, according to what has been made public, the future device will largely resemble the original RAZR model that first appeared in 2004.

However, the Motorola executive said that the company has not ruled out other types of screen folding. Features were even mentioned in an option for the smartphone to be folded in three parts, in a "Z" shape. In any case, most analysts believe that the folding Motorola most likely is not an exact copy of the previous version, has some vague resemblance but ultimately is a completely new design.

It is noteworthy, however, that Dery made it clear that the launch of the device will not be significantly delayed, saying characteristically that "we do not intend to enter this segment of the market later than everyone else." If by "everyone else" he meant Samsung and Huawei, which have already introduced foldable devices, then the Motorola foldable may make its appearance sometime next spring or summer.

Remember that Motorola is used to launching its new devices during a special event that is usually held every August. At last year's event, the 5G-ready Moto Z3 was announced along with the 5G Moto Mod. However, the revival of devices of the past is not something completely new as HMD Global, which now manages the Nokia brand, has already successfully relaunched the iconic Nokia 3310 and Nokia 8110 with considerable success.
