Microsoft has removed the book category from the Microsoft Store, as well as the ability to purchase or rent ebooks.
ΣAccording to ZDNet, Microsoft has decided to "optimize the strategic focus of the Microsoft Store," but is going to annoy customers who have made purchases or rented e-books through the store. Holders will be able to read their ebooks until the end of July, with Microsoft giving full refunds to all e-book owners. Existing pre-orders, of course, are going to be canceled.
Compensation will start as soon as access to ebooks is stopped, with the money returned to the original payment method chosen, even if it is still valid. Otherwise, the amount will be credited to your Microsoft account for use within the Microsoft Store. Purchases made through gift cards and credits will also appear as credit in the account.
Microsoft also allowed special tags and notes to be added to the books you purchased, but even those will disappear in July. As an apology, Microsoft will give $ 25 (≈23 €) extra credit for ebooks that have been "marked" before April 2nd.
It's interesting to see what optimizations will come to the Microsoft Store with the removal of ebooks. Let's not forget that Amazon with the Kindle dominates the ebook market, making it difficult to compete not only for Microsoft, but also for other companies.
