Η Mercedes-Benz is the latest car manufacturer to test them humanoid robots in low-skilled and physically demanding manual work

Η Mercedes-Benz is the latest carmaker to test how humanoid robots could be used to automate "low-skilled, physically demanding, manual work".

The manufacture, robotics company Apptronik announced that he had entered into a commercial agreement with Mercedes to test how it can be used to build "highly advanced robotics" it Apollo – the bipedal robot Apptronik's 160-lb. The news follows a similar pilot program announced by BMW last January.

Η Apptronic says Mercedes is exploring various usage scenarios for Apollo, such as inspecting and delivering parts to workers on the production line. Neither company has disclosed details of the deal or how many Apollo robots are being tested.

According to Apptronic, humanoid robots will allow vehicle manufacturers to begin automating manufacturing operations without having to redesign their existing facilities. The company says its approach “focuses on automating certain physically demanding, repetitive and boring tasks for which it is increasingly difficult to find reliable workers».

The Financial Times they say that Mercedes has begun testing an unknown number of robots Apollo in a factory in Hungary. The country has been experiencing labor shortages for several years as workers migrate to Western Europe, with the Audi and Mercedes have expressed concerns about the job offer in 2016.

This is a new frontier and we want to understand the potential of both robotics and the automotive industry to fill workforce gaps in areas such as low-skilled, repetitive and physically demanding work and free up our highly skilled team members on the line to building the most desirable cars in the world., said its head of production Mercedes, Jörg Burzer.

The Apollo is five feet, eight inches tall, with the Apptronic to claim that the robot can lift objects up to 55 Kg.. His "face" is delightfully funny, and otherwise his form is not too different from other humanoid robots in development, such as the robot Optimus by Tesla or the robots (Figure 01 which is tested by BMW at its manufacturing facility in South Carolina.

Other bipedal robots such as “Digit” by Agility Robotics they are also being pilot tested in its warehouses Amazon in the US.
