Those of you who follow cybersecurity news closely (and you do, we'd say), will surely remember the two recent attacks on LastPass, the popular service password manager. Until recently, the company had reported that the vaults and master passwords of users had not been affected by the attacks, however, the in-depth investigation that followed in collaboration with an external partner showed that things are much more serious.
In particular, the LastPass CEO Karim Toubba, reports on the one hand that no user data was affected, on the other hand it turns on us saying that source code and technical information were stolen. Thanks to the latter, the hackers targeted an employee of the company, took the data and the decryption keys, resulting in decoding particularly critical information of the service's customers.
Among them are included usernames, billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses from which the customer visited the service and, more worryingly, data from customer vaults such as usernames, passwords, secure notes and auto-fill form data.
It should be noted that this data remains encrypted and in accordance with LastPass it will be extremely difficult and time-consuming to decrypt them, unless the hacker can correctly guess the master passwords of users! This means that he has the data of the vaults in his hands, but to really see them he will only need the main password of the user and something like that is not so unlikely to be broken.
Regardless, the whole story is a huge blow to her credibility LastPass and it goes without saying that if you are a user you should change it master password directly.
