The news of the year was definitely yesterday's concerning its essential obligation Google to terminate its cooperation with the Chinese Huawei, at the operating system usage level Android.
ΒOf course, the truth is that Huawei was probably not surprised by the American moves. Let's not forget that just last March Richard Yu, head of Huawei Consumer Products, stated that the company is ready to replace Android and Windows if needed, American Google and Microsoft, respectively on mobile phones and laptops.
In a recent report, Bloomberg brings to the surface additional data on Huawei's backstage moves in order to prepare for moves like yesterday. More specifically, it is reported that the App Gallery application found on every Huawei and Honor device, running Android, is in fact an attempt by the company to create its own alternative in the Google Play Store.
The Bloomberg article claims that as early as 2018, Huawei had approached application developers to agree to include their applications in the App Gallery with the prospect that this move will help them expand into the Chinese market.
Obviously Huawei, like any Android phone maker, knows the magnitude of its reliance on Google's online app store, the difference being that Huawei is treated with hostility by the same US Government. So, the company should somehow prepare for the possibility of offering devices without fully supported software or without the range of applications offered by the competition.
Although the App Gallery could act as a replacement for the Play Store, this would not solve all the problems for Huawei. To be precise, this would solve only a part of their problem that concerns exclusively Google. The fact that the Chinese company has been fined for not cooperating with any American company - even with a three-month suspension period - practically means that it will not be able to "put" popular applications of American origin on its mobile phones. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest are just some of them.
Also as we learned today, Huawei is seeking to reach an agreement with Aptoide, which will replace Google Play on its devices from now on.
Aptoide may seem like an ideal solution as it already has over 900.000 applications available, but it has loose controls on the applications it has, resulting in many times problems with malware found on them.
