Amazon wrote in a blog post some of its own suggestions for guidelines to be applied to face recognition systems and tools.
ΤFace recognition tools are useful and there is no doubt about it, however they could potentially restrict citizens' rights related to privacy and the protection of personal data.
This is why many activist organizations are pushing governments across the country to take action against this unacceptable phenomenon, so that any company that offers face recognition tools can do so responsibly.
With no such law yet in the United States, Amazon wrote in a blog post some of its own suggestions for guidelines to be applied to face recognition systems and tools.
Specifically, the article states that it must be ensured that face recognition is not used for malicious purposes and does not discriminate between people, such as between white and black people.
It also states: "We support calls for an appropriate national legal framework that protects the individual political rights of all people and ensures that governments are transparent in their use of face recognition technology."
Below Amazon explains in detail the guidelines it proposes:
- Face recognition must always be used in accordance with the law, including regulations on the protection of personal data, without prejudice to human dignity.
- When face recognition technology is used by a government agency to identify an individual, it is essential that they do not violate their civil liberties.
- When face recognition technology is used by public authorities through automated systems, it is always necessary for a professional to review the data to ensure that the decisions made will not violate human rights.
- Public services need to be transparent about how they use face recognition technology.
- It is always required to notify the person being videotaped through face recognition technology in public or commercial places.
