This is an important issue, especially for professional users. In a short post on community forum, Google has officially acknowledged the missing file issue and confirmed that the issue originates from Drive app for desktop.
While there's no explanation for the bug, Google says that a "limited subset of Drive for desktop users" is seeing the issue and that it's related to versions 84.0.0.0 to 84.0.4.0, which were recently released. Google is still "investigating" the problem, so we don't know when it will be fixed.
Google also tells users to avoid signing out of their Google Account from the Drive desktop app and not to delete or move data from the “DriveFS”, located at AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS on Windows and Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS on macOS.
However, Google recommends that you create a copy of this folder if there is enough space on the system.
