Google Chrome: Google is experimenting with how URLs appear in the popular Browser

The experiment is intended to determine whether its change how URLs are displayed in the address bar helps users to identify the malicious websites they are visiting.

ΒWe look at URLs to find out which website we are visiting, but it can be difficult to find a fake address. Probably some "i" has been changed to "1," or "o" to a "0," and there are many more methods used by scammers to try to trick us into trusting malicious websites. In response, Google runs an experiment and changes the way URLs are displayed to users through the Chrome browser.

In one Chromium Blog post, The Emily Stark, Eric Mill, and Shweta Panditrao Chrome's security team explained that a randomly selected group of Chrome 86 users will start to see URLs appear differently. Instead of showing the full address, Chrome will collapse it to show only the domain name by default. Hovering the mouse over the address bar will expand the text to display the full URL.

The Chrome security team explains that, “Our purpose is to understand - through actual use - whether displaying URLs in this way helps users realize that they are visiting a malicious website, and protects them from phishing and social engineering attacks. If feedback shows a significant improvement in the detection of malicious URLs by users, we should expect Google to implement the simpler display of URLs as a default browser feature. However, if you do not like the idea, it will be an option that you can turn off in Chrome settings.

If you find yourself in this experimental group that is testing this feature, Google would appreciate your feedback from its user experience. If you want to try it, install it Chrome Canary or Dev channel, open the address chrome: // flags in Chrome 86, and enable these two or three parameters before restarting Chrome:

  • # omnibox-ui-reveal-steady-state-url-path-query-and-ref-on-hover
  • # omnibox-ui-sometimes-elide-to-registrable-domain
  • Optionally, # omnibox-ui-hide-steady-state-url-path-query-and-ref-on-interaction to display the full URL when loading the page until you interact with it
