The German state of Hesse has decided to ban the use of the suite Microsoft Office 365 and Google and Apple cloud services from its schools to protect the personal data of students and teachers. Especially in the case of Microsoft, the decision was made because the company closed its data center in Germany, as a result of which user data is stored in US data centers and therefore exposed to the US authorities.
Its telemetry system Windows 10 collects a wealth of data, depending on the settings chosen by the user, from the topics of the emails, to the phrases that the user states for translation and to the information of the system in case it "crashes". Microsoft attempted to rectify the situation by launching it Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer which allows you to track what data you share with the company. However, Commissioner Hesse believes that school data are more sensitive than when it comes to students.
The same goes for their cloud services Google and Apple, (Drive and iWork), therefore, schools have the sole option of using software that stores data on local servers rather than in the cloud.
