Η Meta warns its users Facebook for hundreds of apps in its app stores Apple and Google which were specially designed to steal login credentials in social network app
The company says it has identified more than 400 malicious applications disguised as games, photo editors and other utilities and that it notifies users who “they may have unknowingly compromised their accounts by downloading these apps and sharing their credentials». In accordance with Bloomberg, one million users may have been affected.
In a post, the Meta says the apps tricked users into downloading them with fake reviews and promises of useful functionality (both common tactics for other scam apps that try to take your money instead of your credentials). But when some of the apps were opened, users were asked to sign in to Facebook before they could do anything – if they did, their credentials could be intercepted.
Meta reported the applications to Google and Apple and they came down, but the fact that they got to the shops in the first place, is not good. This is especially true for Apple, which for years has argued that installing apps outside App Store, is "a cyber criminal's best friend».
It claims that its app review process, which theoretically vets apps before they're made available on the App Store, has helped it create a “trusted ecosystem for millions of applications». Still, the company has struggled to banish malicious apps from its platform, with some reportedly costing its users millions of dollars.
To be fair, Facebook's data suggests that the issue is significantly worse on the Play Store – of the 402 malicious apps on its list, the 355 was for Android and 47 for iOS. Interestingly, Androids covered a wide range of genres, from games, VPN, photo editors, and horoscope apps, while for iPhone it's related to managing business pages or ads.
