Equally addictive are smartphones to parents and teens

A survey by the Pew Research Center (in a US sample) shows that 36% of respondents think they spend a lot of time on their cell phone while close to 72% of teens look at their messages when they wake up.

ΕIt is now obvious that excessive use of smartphones is a problem that affects not only teenagers but also parents. In research of the American Pew Research Center, which involved people aged 13 to 17 with their guardians, it seemed that both groups find it difficult to leave the devices in their hands.

Of the teens, 54% believe they spend too much time on their smartphone, while among parents the number was close to 36%. 72% of parents believe that their child is removed from their cell phone during a conversation, while 51% of adolescents report similar behavior from their parents.

One of the main problems that comes with excessive use of smartphones is the distraction it causes. Respondents were asked to answer the extent to which they lose their attention at work or in class. Here, it is important to look at the numbers in more detail: 8% of teens believe that they are often distracted (often) from their mobile phones during the lesson, while 23% answered that this only happens sometimes (sometimes) with the sum being 31%.

For parents, the numbers are noticeably different, with 15% reporting that they are often distracted from work on their mobile phones, while 24% say that it sometimes happens with the total being 39%.

A very large percentage seem to wake up with their mobile phones, as 72% of teens look at notifications on their device when they wake up and respectively 57% of parents have the same habit.

Parents, however, are aware of the problem with 65% worrying about how much time their children spend in front of screens, while 57% limit their teens' exposure to the internet and mobile phones.

The same research touches on other technology addiction issues that have come to the fore in recent years, such as video game addiction and we suggest you read the whole here.
