EU: Ends data collection (with few exceptions) from smartphones and the Internet

Σwith a historical decision, the Court of Justice of the European Union decide against the States which require them telecommunications providers to collect data in general and without any differentiation from the connections made by users to Internet, but also on their smartphones.

From now on, data collection will be allowed only in cases "serious threat to National Security" and must have been approved by court order or by an "independent Authority". With this decision, the Court essentially confirms the case "Tele2" that had dealt with it in 2016 regarding the generalized data collection.

The new decision came after group lawsuits by organizations such as Privacy International and The Quadrature of the Net, who revealed that the mass surveillance practices of some countries (see United Kingdom, France and Belgium) blatantly violate the basic human rights of citizens. Therefore, EU fully clarifies that Member State governments will not be able to request data from telecommunications providers except with serious exceptions.

We remind you that the EU had legislated on restricting the data of European users that can be transferred to the US on behalf of American companies.
