China reduces children's time and access to Online Games

Η government worries about rising myopia and targets online games.

This is not a good time for video game companies in China. It was recently revealed that the licenses for the release of new toys have not been approved for months and it seems that the new releases of toys will be significantly less in order to save children's eyesight.

Yes, you read that right. The Chinese government is using the sight of young children as an excuse to impose new restrictions on the sale of new toys. More specifically, online games will be limited both in terms of how many are available to play and for how long they are allowed to play depending on their age.

As he says Eurogamer, Chinese President Xi Jinping is the one who worries about children's vision so much, where the Ministry of Education will implement new regulations due to poor eyesight and more specifically myopia.

China may have a legal case for limiting the amount of time children can spend each day. The risk of myopia increases when you spend very little time outdoors as a child or focus your eyes on nearby objects (such as a television or telephone screen) for long periods of time. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person, not just playing games online.

It is not clear what the restrictions will be on new game releases and limited playing time. China monitors people very well, so detecting a child playing an online game and starting a timer that closes it automatically may be possible.

The pressure of children spending more time outside than playing games may provoke a reaction from parents. Air pollution is a major problem in China and recently discovered that it makes children less smart.

The Chinese government may or may not be aware of the real cause of myopia outbreaks (20% in primary school students and up to 50% in secondary school students). Last April, the Post Magazine referred to the pressure children face in China to progress academically, leading them to spend most of their time indoors reading rather than out in the sun.
