Daylight saving time is more likely than ever after a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday. The debate over the usefulness of daylight saving time in Europe has long been open, with voices for the negative effects of changing time increasing.
The European Parliament met on Thursday with this issue and adopted a resolution in favor of abolishing daylight saving time. "So if we ever decide to abolish the change of time, it must be done through the European Union in a coordinated and unified way," said Transport Commissioner Violeta Bults, who attended the EP plenary session in Strasbourg.
The resolution, which was adopted by 384 votes to 153 with 12 abstentions, allows the Commission to evaluate and, if necessary, amend Directive 84/2000 on summer time.
As it has been known for a few months now, the European Commission is considering the requests for the abolition of summer time, but now it also has the resolution in its hands.
Many people complain that they miss an hour of sleep. According to a recent survey by the DAK health insurance fund, almost three-quarters of Germans are calling for the time change to be abolished.
The time change was first introduced in Germany during World War I. Between the two world wars and after World War II, change was abolished. Only in 1980 was it reintroduced with the aim of making better use of daylight. However, the result is controversial.
Not all countries participate in the change of time. Russia, for example, does not change the time in the summer as the country has eleven different time zones. On the other hand, the artificially introduced summer season was so attractive for Turkey that last year it decided to maintain the summer time in winter as well.
