Vulnerable to attacks by ransomwares and malwares are even the DSLR cameras According to a recent survey by one of the world's leading providers of cybersecurity solutions, Check Point Software.
ΑThis is possible through PTP, the image transfer protocol supported by all modern cameras for transferring photos from the camera to the computer either wirelessly or wired via USB.
Nowadays manufacturers use PTP for additional actions such as capturing live video and upgrading the camera firmware. In its tests, Check Point used the model DSC 80D SLR which supports both USB and Wi-Fi, recognizing critical vulnerabilities in PTP.
According to the research, since the PTP protocol is standardized and integrated into other brands of cameras, the same security issues apply to models from other manufacturers.
«Any "smart" device, including DSLR cameras, is vulnerable to attacksSaid Eyal Itkin, Security Researcher at Check Point Software Technologies.
«Cameras are no longer simply connected to USB, but to the Wi-Fi network and the environment that comes with it. This makes them more vulnerable to threats, as attackers can insert ransomware into both the camera and the computer to which it is connected. Photographs could possibly be intercepted or locked"Until the user pays a ransom to"unlock" the material".
