Avast has announced a new fraud attempt for months, called UltimaSMS, and as the name implies, these fake and dangerous applications are distributed mainly via SMS to unsuspecting victims.

Το Google Play can often be a dangerous place to download applications - as scammers and hackers lurk waiting to download one of their fake applications. THE Google periodically removes these dangerous applications, but that does not mean that some of them manage to get out of control and end up on your devices.

Η software & cybersecurity company Avast has announced a new fraud attempt that has been going on for months, and that is called Last SMS. As the name implies, these are fake and dangerous applications distributed via SMS to unsuspecting victims.

They have been recorded in total 151 applications who have taken part in this deception attempt, and you can see the full list here. The aim of the campaign is to register victims in expensive SMS services and leaking money, stealing their account information.

As you can see, in this list, there are some applications that seem legitimate and can trick you into thinking that they are useful tools. Downloading and installing one of these applications will allow hackers to steal the device location, IMEI and your phone number, to receive information about the country you are in. If you open one of the dangerous applications, a screen will appear asking you to enter your phone number and / or email address.

This premium SMS service in which you will be registered without your will, it costs up to $ 40 per monthAnd you will be charged weekly until you understand what is happening.

The applications discovered are essentially identical in structure to other genuine applications. These dangerous copies are disguised as genuine applications through well-crafted application profiles in the Google Play Store.

These profiles feature compelling photos and enticing app descriptions along with often high rating averages. However, upon closer inspection, they have vague and generic privacy policy information and basic developer profiles, including generic email addresses. They also tend to have numerous negative reviews from users who identified them as scams or have already fallen victim to this scam. , the Avast team explained.

To make matters worse, some of these applications were distributed through popular social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, but also TikTok.
