Google warns Samsung to fix vulnerabilities in its Exynos modems

The Project Zero, Google's team dedicated to security research, found some major problems with Samsung's modems that power devices such as Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and some models of Galaxy S22 and A53

According to the post made on their website, a variety of Exynos modem have a number of vulnerabilities that could "allow an attacker to remotely compromise a phone, at the baseband level and without user interaction,” without needing much more than a victim's phone number. And the disappointing thing about this dangerous situation is that Samsung is dragging its feet to fix the problem.

Researchers believe the following Samsung devices may be at risk:

  • Galaxy S22, M33, M13, M12, A71, A53, A33, A21, A13, A12 and A04
  • Her smartphone Vivo included in the series S16, S15, S6, X70, X60 and X30
  • Generally all devices that use the Exynos W920 chipset
  • All vehicles using the Exynos Auto T5123 chipset

It's worth noting that for devices to be vulnerable, they must be using one of the affected Samsung modems with Exynos SoC, and the phones sold except Europe and some African countries that have a Qualcomm processor and Qualcomm modem are safe from these specific vulnerabilities.

Unfortunately, the Samsung Smartphones that have been released in Europe with Exynos processors, like the popular one A53 and European S22, may be vulnerable.

Theoretically, the S21 and S23 are safe as Samsung's latest flagships use it Qualcomm worldwide, while older devices with Exynos chip, use a modem that does not appear in the list of chips affected by this vulnerability.

If you know that your phone is using one of the vulnerable modems and you are concerned about its security, the Project Zero states that you can protect yourself by disabling calls through it Wi-Fi and Voice-over-LTE. Your calls may be worse in quality, but it's probably worth doing if you want your device to stay secure.
