New research reveals that almost all children from 7 to 12 years old have a smart phone or tablet

Times have changed and children from an early age spend many hours online. However, special care is needed in the use they make as well there are many dangers, for both their physical and mental health, which is why parents should set boundaries.


ΣAccording to the latest Kaspersky Survey conducted by research firm Savanta, 84% of parents worldwide are concerned about their children's online safety.

Nevertheless, parents spend, on average, just 46 minutes talking to their children about cybersecurity throughout their childhood. More than half (58%) of respondents invest less than 30 minutes discussing the subject, which is half the time of a typical school lesson.

The privacy and security of children online is one of the most important concerns of parents. According to Kaspersky Research, more than 9 out of 10 children between the ages of 7 and 12 worldwide have a device, smartphone or tablet, with internet access.

In particular, almost 2 in 3 parents (64%) agreed that their children spend too much time online, which means that they are constantly exposed to various potential risks.

The most dangerous cyber threats

The most dangerous cyber threats, according to parents, are sexual or violent content (27%), internet addiction (26%) and receiving anonymous messages or content that motivates them to develop violent or delinquent behavior (14%) .

To reduce the potential impact and explain the risk of surfing the internet, 81% of parents say that the responsibility of teaching children to surf the internet safely falls on themselves and the school. 86% believe that it is more effective for parents to take it on, as children generally trust them more.

With parents acknowledging their responsibility to provide guidance to their children, when in practice they spend less than an hour doing so, Kaspersky's research makes it clear that parents find such discussions difficult. During these conversations, the parents mentioned the following as the biggest challenges:

Explain the threats in such a way that children can understand and identify them (60%).
To be able to persuade children to take the potential threats seriously (51%).
To cultivate in children the confidence not to fall victim to peer pressure (42%) ".
