Xiaomi preparing new Smartphones with Selfie cameras at the bottom of the screen?

In recent years there has been a clear trend in the smartphone industry to create devices with a larger screen-to-body ratio.

ΤThe large bezels we saw a few years ago have been completely eliminated, and various alternatives to the position of the Selfie camera and other sensors have been found. Some smartphone makers choose a notch at the top of the screen, others choose a folding camera and most recently the first mobile phones with a hole in the screen have appeared.

This time LetsGoDigital has reports of a new Xiaomi mobile phone, in which the Chinese smartphone maker has devised an additional alternative to the position of the Selfie camera. The information comes from two design patents, which Xiaomi has registered with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patents were published on March 29, 2019 and show a smartphone with almost full screen.

Dual camera at the bottom of the screen

While the Selfie camera is usually mounted on the top of the device, Xiaomi has chosen to mount the camera on the bottom of the screen. We had seen something similar in the first Mi Mix, but there the camera was placed on the lower part of the body (Bezel) and not on the screen.

So this time, at the bottom of the screen, a recess has been created for a dual Selfie camera. Looks like the phone is upside down, and no, that's not an April Fool's joke.

The question is whether this particular design will negatively affect the quality of the Selfie photo, because the front camera is now positioned lower, creating a different - less natural perspective on the photo, as your chin becomes a disproportionately large ratio of camera position, and the How Xiaomi will prevent this is not clear from the patent. Users logically just have to hold the device a little higher to be in line with the position of the camera, as they had to do in the first Mi Mix whose Selfie camera was located at about the same point.

Now you may be wondering, since this design does not benefit selfies photos, what is the purpose of this design?

The answer is that aesthetically just this position seems to be better, because your eyes are more focused on the top of the screen, instead of the bottom, and the notch is just less noticeable.

The first patent also features two Xiaomi models. The front of both devices is identical, and only the back differs from each other. Both designs show a dual camera, both on the front and the back.

One model has a smooth back of the device, as we usually do from the Xiaomi Mi and Redmi series, while the other model shows a narrow strip on both sides of the device (see the two pictures above). It is possible to use other material for this device, although it is also possible that the curvature of the device is simply displayed this way.

The second patent has many similarities to the first. And here we see two Xiaomi smartphone models, where only the back is different. The back is incidentally identical to the first patent, and only on the front differs.

This model also has a notch at the bottom of the screen. This time, however, the notch is not in the middle, but the dual Selfie camera is placed on both sides of the device.

The design is somewhat similar to the patent we mentioned last year, where we saw a smartphone with quad notch . In this model, however, two equal notches were made in the edges.

It's hard to predict if Xiaomi really intends to release a new smartphone with a notch on the bottom. What is certain is that the Chinese manufacturer more often chooses these unique designs, to stand out from the crowd, and many times these patents do not have to be implemented in practice.
