Xiaomi: Demonstration of the new foldable smartphone with a 3: 2 screen ratio

The president Xiaomi, Lin Bin, shows the company the upcoming foldable smartphone of the company. It is not clear if the video was intentionally leaked, however it allows us to take a closer look at the device.

ΤThe original video was uploaded to the Chinese social network Weibo, while the above video is a repost on YouTube. The device appears to be the same one Twitter user @evleak showed earlier this month.

The phone does not fold in order to close as a device, with the screen inside. Instead, it is divided into three and its two parts fold backwards. In the video we can clearly see the locks of the smartphone, so we imagine that Lin Bin is holding an original in his hands.

In all probability the ratio of the screen to the device will be fully open 3: 2. Lin Bin scrolls through a video application, then folds the phone and the interface changes instantly according to the new view function.

Although much of the screen folds to the side and back of the phone, the entire screen remains active. In addition, from the video we can see the power button on the top of the device, when we hold it in portrait mode.

However, the video does not reveal when the smartphone will be available, nor how close Xiaomi is to completing its design. Nevertheless, judging by the aspects and the imperfect locks of the device, the company has a lot of work to do before the product is available for mass production.

Xiaomi has not yet thought of a name for this smartphone and is asking internet users to say their suggestions. Finally, the company will be at the Mobile World Congress 2019 where we believe it will reveal more about its folding device.

At first glance you say: “wow wow! What did the Chinese do? "Samsung and other companies that went down to make foldable devices have stepped down. The thinner, the tighter the corners that fold, say, perfect." But there is a key problem. They did not make it in a report for people to see and use. The OLED screens themselves are terribly slim. We are talking about tenths of a millimeter. What makes a device thicker is 1st: the internal hardware (battery, boards, speakers, vibration motors, body amplifiers, etc.) and 2nd: Anything that will come in front of the OLED to protect it (glass, plastic or other). Another Chinese company was the first to show a foldable smartphone at CES. The unfolding angle was awful. It did not even make a corner, but a cylindrical thing. So you ended up with something that doesn't actually fit in your pocket because it will break. But now let's think about why this company, as well as Samsung, have not shown such thin foldable devices or that have such tight folding angles. The 2 reasons mentioned above. 1. They had full hardware media 2. The screens were adequately protected for prolonged day to day use. So when Xiaomi shows me now a device that is thinner than any other and folds in 2 vertical angles at each edge, I can only think that 1. They did not put full hardware inside 2. Above the OLED panel has not entered suitable protection for the panel. The glass can not bend, so manufacturers turn to other materials. The plastic, although it can bend, With repeated folds, it will end up with a whitewash in the middle and at some point it will break. So companies like Samsung have been looking for special materials that can withstand such treatment without being affected by the above 2. However, these materials above the screen do not allow the device to be so thin or so flexible. Simply put, what Xiaomi is showing us here is just something that can not be built if it wants its phone to work properly. Expect it when it is released to be much uglier and much thicker. It is also almost certain that the unfolding angles will not be so tight. Realistically the OLED panel can be folded like this, the material on top is not.
