Xiaomi filed a new patent for the Mix Alpha 2 with surround screen and hidden cameras
Xiaomi is known for its innovative and beautifully designed smartphones and one of its most ambitious projects was the Xiaomi MIX Alpha, a concept phone with surround screen which covered almost the entire body of the device. However, this phone never went into mass production due to technical difficulties and high production costs.
From the looks of it though, Xiaomi has not given up on the idea of a Smartphone Surround screen and is working on a new version that could solve some of the problems of the original model. This is the "Mix Alpha 2”, whose design patent was recently approved and announced by State Intellectual Property Office of China.
The patent shows that the Xiaomi MIX Alpha 2 will have a curved display that will span the front, left and right sides of the phone; without any visible bezels. In addition, the phone will have the cameras placed below the screen on both the front and back of the device, eliminating the need for a Notch or any hole in screens. On the back of the device there will be three openings for the rear cameras and a central part that will be separated by a smaller panel to house the rest of the device's sensors or some other functions.
The MIX Alpha 2 would therefore be an evolution of the previous prototype phone, keeping the surround screen design but adding the under-display cameras and side buttons, which were absent from the original model. This could make the phone more practical and functional, without losing its aesthetics.
However, you should keep in mind that this is only a patent and there is no guarantee that Xiaomi will eventually build this phone or release it in the markets. The patent could simply be a way to protect one's ideas or to explore some different manufacturing possibilities.
The positive thing is that the registration of the patents for the MIX Alpha 2, shows that Xiaomi continues to experiment and try to push the boundaries of technology and design in the smartphones it manufactures.
