ΜFollowing the announcement of a new line of Xiao AI smart speakers in the middle of the year, the great Chinese technology company Xiaomi adds another new product to its artificial intelligence product line.
The new gadget is basically Xiaomi's proposal to compete with the popular Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show, looking for a place in the budding space of smart digital home helpers. This is made clear by the design of the Mi AI Smart Display Speaker Pro 8, which is similar to that of the Nest Hub. However, Xiaomi's smart "screen" is not an absolute copy of Google's product.
First of all, the Mi AI Touchscreen Pro 8 has an 8-inch screen, so it sits between the 7-inch screen of the Nest Hub and the 10-inch screen of the Max. Its base, where the speakers are located, is curved and looks more beautiful than Google's. The power and volume keys are located on the right side of the screen, while there is a camera above the screen.
Xiaomi's smart display is only available in one color variation, that of traditional white chalk, unlike the Nest Hub which is available in four colors.
Xiaomi claims that the 8-inch screen offers 36% more screen compared to a 7-inch screen. The resolution is HD (720p), but it is said to have high image quality, while it also has an oil-phobic coating to avoid the presence of fingerprints on it. Xiaomi also says that the screen is completely laminated so that there are no reflections.
The device has three subwoofers - each of which is 50,8 mm in size and features neodymium boron iron magnets. Xiaomi claims that the speakers are professionally tuned by DTS.
The smart screen has a camera on the top for video calling. Xiaomi says it can be used to make video calls with supported models of its Smart TVs, such as the Mi TV Pro 55, Mi TV Pro 65, Mi TV 5 Pro 55 and Mi TV 5 Pro 65. However, this feature will released in OTA upgrade before the end of February 2020.
The Mi AI Smart Display Speaker Pro 8 will work with a variety of smart home products covering 28 different categories and up to 54 different IoT platforms such as those of Philips, Viomi, Yeelight, Smartmi, Konke and Roborock. Connecting to devices is easy thanks to the advanced Bluetooth Mesh Gateway technology.
Xiaomi announces that it will release a new feature by March 31, which will allow you to connect your smart home devices to the smart screen using simply voice commands. All you have to do is ask him to find the device and he will find it, connect to it giving you full control. However, this feature will be limited, at least initially to Mijia devices, and will exclude smart security cameras, locks and bells, for obvious reasons.
Xiaomi is partnering with QQ Music for music streaming while the iQIYI, Youku, Bilibili and TikTok platforms handle video streaming. There are also other audio streaming platforms the company works with to listen to podcasts, fairy tales and e-books.
The new smart screen comes at a price of ¥ 599 (€ 77). Those who pre-order it, can get it at a discount, at ¥ 499 (€ 64). It will be released on December 18 at 10 a.m.
