New information shows that Xiaomi works closely with ARM for the construction of her own SoC

The processor is the heart of every Smartphone, and currently, major SoC manufacturing companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek are the dominant manufacturers in the field of ARM processors.

From what it seems, however, Xiaomi wants to change that status, and some new information suggests that it is working closely with ARM to make its own processors.

Chief Executive Officer MediaTek, Rick Tsai, directly confirmed that ARM is working with Xiaomi to develop chips, but while the source of this statement comes from a report by Counterpoint Research, the original publication is hard to find.

This news originally appeared via popular and reputable tipster, Digital Chat Station on Weibo, and ARM was reportedly previously working with Oppo, but this partnership faced some adverse challenges and was eventually abandoned.

There have been some serious reports since 2022 about her Oppo to attempt to manufacture its own Smartphone chips through it ARM. Oppo most likely intended to build and use its own processors ARM's Cortex and Mali GPUs in its own SoCs, however, Oppo has halted efforts to design a chip in 2023, largely due to the downturn in the global smartphone market.

Now that the Oppo is out of the picture, it looks like ARM has found a new partner in Xiaomi which plans to build its own chipset for its global smartphones.

It will be interesting to see who Xiaomi chooses to design and manufacture the chip in question. For example, the Apple, is based on TSMC for chip manufacturing A Series Bionic, while Google is currently based on Samsung for Tensor SoCs.

So, Xiaomi will also have to choose its partner for this effort. ARM will provide the technological basis for Xiaomi's processors, but developing a chip from scratch involves a different set of challenges.

Ο Parv Sharma, its senior analyst Counterpoint Research, also highlighted the complexity of developing a chip and the tendency of companies to outsource this work to specialized centers. THE MediaTek, in particular, will benefit from this shift of Smartphone OEMs, as it is actively working with many of them to improve the chips for their devices.

Only time will tell if the Xiaomi eventually it will be able to successfully develop its own SoC from scratch.

Let's not forget the failure of Surge, the chip developed by xiaomi for its entry level mobile phones, which crashed.
From 2017 to 2021 when the surge C1 was introduced (the S1 was supposed to appear in 2018) and abandoned in 2023, it apparently had production equipment left.
(Personal view: ) Since surge was using ARM cores, they figured out a way to lend the hardware to ARM while gaining publicity in an area that was failing.

Sebenernya Xiaomi surge S2 sangat potencial kompeten, tidak jadi rilis xiaomi. Kalau misal xiaomi seduh bikin soc sendiri, xiaomi tidak ketergantungan lagi penyefia supplai soc Qualcomm atau Mediatek. (Mereka bisa hemat, beli soc supplai vendor brand lain) done by apple, samsung dan Google.
