H Xiaomi Corp confirmed on Friday that he had removed the head of the African section from office, for violating Chinese law regarding obscene public behavior.
ΣThe company fired the vice president, according to an internal letter dated May 23rd that went widely circulated online. Wang Lingming, for violation of Article 44 of China's Public Safety Act.
Xiaomi confirmed the authenticity of the letter, which also states that Wang was detained for five days by public security officials, but the Chinese company declined to comment further.
Reuters has so far been unable to reach out to Wang for comment.
Article 44 of China's Public Security Act provides:Whoever behaves indecently towards another person or intentionally exposes his body in a public place, is detained for a period of not less than five days and less than ten days".
Xiaomi had appointed Wang as head of the newly formed division in Africa last January. He later started a partnership with the e-commerce platform Jumia, to distribute Xiaomi phones in Africa, in order to face the competition from Samsung Electronics , Huawei Technologies and Shenzhen Transsion Holdings.
