Xiaomi: This is why Android updates are delayed on devices with Mediatek SoC

As you will probably have all noticed, smartphones are based on Qualcomm SoC, are updated much faster in the new versions of Android, than the Smartphones based on Mediatek SoC.

ΌWhen preparing to buy a smartphone, we often focus on the technical specifications sheet, comparing these specifications with other devices that are priced similarly.

For example, we usually focus on GB of available RAM, in how many MP is the main camera, but also the SoC with which it is equipped device.

The world of Android Smartphones is dominated by two major manufacturers SoC : h Qualcomm and MediaTek.

In previous years, the Mediatek was synonymous with a low-value SoC that did not have the performance offered by Qualcomm SoCs, but that has changed for a long time, as almost all of the Taiwanese company's recent SoCs (Mediatek), have been shown to offer approximately the same performance as their respective strengths Qualcomm SoC.

But with the salient advantages, you must know some of the disadvantages as well. Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO.

Specifically we are talking about system updates (MIUI), something that almost all its owners are looking for Android Smartphones, who always want to have the latest version of Android on their devices.

In her case Xiaomi, we know that MIUI developers are first updating the devices that have been released in China (Chinese editions of MIUI), later extending to a second year and timetable for the release of updates worldwide (Global & EEA ROMS).

But you may be wondering what all this has to do with Qualcomm and MediaTek?

The reason why updates to Xiaomi Smartphones with MediaTek SoC are delayed.

As you will probably have all noticed, smartphones are based on Qualcomm SoC, are updated much faster on new versions of Android, from Smartphones based on Mediatek SoC.

For example the first MIUI ROM which are based on Android 12 Beta, are currently only available on devices equipped with Snapdragon SoC, and very few devices with Mediatek SoC who have received the corresponding upgrade to Android 12.

The real reason why MediaTek is lagging behind Qualcomm in the field of updates on Android is very simple.

According to the Xiaomi executive,  Li Ming, Google sends the source code of the new versions of Android simultaneously to both Qualcomm as in MediaTek. In this way, both manufacturers have the necessary time to release the necessary updates, especially to the new Drivers that should be given to all OEM Smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi.

But it can be so Qualcommm as well as Mediatek to simultaneously receive the new version of Android from Google, however the two companies have completely different numbers of staff in the respective working groups. THE Qualcomm has a much larger skilled workforce and Developers from that of MediaTek, and therefore the Qualcomn is able to distribute the updated software much faster than Mediatek, and this is the real reason why MediaTek usually lags far behind in updates, which sometimes become available up to months later than the corresponding updates at Qualcomm.

But let's look at the positive side of this delay, as he suggests Li Ming. This delay in updates for smartphones equipped with Mediatek SoC, allows the company to detect problems in the Android code in time, and reduce any damage from a problematic upgrade to a small number of devices, and solve the relevant problems in faster times.
