Here's why benchmarks on Android smartphones are more important than you think!

The benchmarks scores are the starting point of intense discussions, as they give a numerical value which objectively shows how much better one smartphone is compared to another.

ΚWith brands and various models gaining fanatical fans, you often hear users defending the lost phone, emphasizing that these benchmarks do not correspond to real use. And although this is somewhat correct, it does not mean that the results are not significant.

Performance in real use is impossible to simulate without the use of software. Think that without tests that the processors reach their limits, how can we say which smartphone responds best?

The performance tests are the truth that they mainly concern enthusiasts and those who want to find out what is the limit of their system. No one will go to a store and ask the store representative about AnTuTu scores before choosing a Samsung smartphone or an LG. But people often compete with each other for everything and smartphones are no exception. Once companies find that people are paying attention to the benchmarks, they in turn start emphasizing them. The AnTuTu and Geekbench scores have become something similar to the times at the Nurburgring.

Do these times tell you how a car will behave in everyday driving? Not so much. But they tell you how fast it is. They are not very different with phones.

Of course some companies overdo it. Some companies have been caught stealing benchmarks, optimizing the smartphone to be faster when it realizes that an application is running. This is like having extra horsepower when you are on the track. (which some vehicles do, but explicitly mention). This makes many people question the reliability of the benchmarks as a whole, but so far app developers have stood the test of time by removing such scores.

Continuing the parallel with the car, the 0-100 in a vehicle in no way shows you its performance in everyday life, as you will rarely need to do so. But it is an important measurement, because it shows you the acceleration that the car shows when you need it. Similarly, when running a benchmark app with a complex 3D scene on your smartphone, it aims to show you how your smartphone will handle heavy 3D games.

In addition, they are very important, as they help you to see if the performance has really improved compared to the previous generation. With smartphones reaching a point where the high-end experience is barely distinguishable between different generations, without benchmarking apps it will be impossible to tell if the latest and most recent chips are actually faster. You will wonder, though, why manufacturers make chips faster if users can't figure out the difference. Because, software developers start and create applications that use the extra power of devices.

There are also benchmarks that measure battery life, and allow the user to get a very good view of the autonomy that the device will offer. But at some point we would like to have benchmarks available that will measure the AI performance of smartphones for example, to verify or not the manufacturer's claims on this issue, or to prove whether it is just a marketing ploy aimed at selling more devices.

In short, benchmarks are not only here to stay, but will play a bigger role in the future as performance improves and we will begin to need tests for new technologies that will make their debut on the smartphones of the future.
