Vodafone: Blocks the doubling of Internet speeds with precautionary measures in EETT

The Vodafone precautionary measures in EETT As a result, the approval of part of the OTE packages that had been announced in December was left out of the Plenary Session of EETT yesterday.

Τthree months after the filing of a written protest - its precautionary measures Vodafone to EETT for the internet speed upgrade packages announced by OTE in December, the first Plenary Session convened yesterday after the renewal of the Commission's term left out of discussion part of the packages that were to be approved in order to consider her request Vodafone.

Although Vodafone has recently been involved in negotiations between OTE and providers to reduce the fee for transferring their subscribers from urban centers to cabins, it seems that no agreement has been reached and now it is starting new round of confrontation.

EETT is even considering the possibility of hearing for precautionary measures. If such a procedure is indeed chosen, it is expected to last long enough, essentially leaving in the air the approvals of OTE packages but also thousands of subscribers who were waiting for the free doubling of their speeds.

What should be noted is that one third of OTE's packages have already been approved by the previous Plenary Session of EETT and that they have already start upgrades.

In fact, EETT had asked the providers to enter into a dialogue with OTE to reduce the prices for the transfer of their subscribers from urban centers to cabins, so that there is a profit margin for the providers as well. The discussions were about better prices for transporting customers from urban centers to the cabins, when this will be done en masse and not individually.

In the context of this negotiation, OTE and the alternative providers should reach an agreement, in order to make it possible for the latter to double the speeds. Otherwise, they would have to contact EETT in order to get a price commonly accepted on both sides, so that as many consumers as possible enjoy twice the speeds.

It is noted that in order to increase the speeds, the alternative providers will have to calculate the transition from the urban centers to the outdoor cabins (one-time fee of 33 euros per connection), the router changes to the subscribers, the difference in the leases paid to OTE etc. .

However, it seems that EETT should now intervene not only for the agreement between the two sides, but also for the precautionary measures who had been in the drawer for about three months and had not been heard, as there was no Plenary Session. It is noteworthy, of course, that during all this time, Vodafone had not extended its request either, since it was sitting at the dialogue table.

The only loser from the whole process seems to be consumer, which will wait in its… handset for increased speeds.

However, before the plenary session, a high-ranking Commission official answering a question from Euro2day.gr if all OTE packages are to be approved, he had said characteristically:

The process of approving OTE packages has not changed. In this case, too, what is provided by the current regulatory framework applies. Our goal is always to market packages with the highest possible speeds (quality of service) at the lowest possible prices, for the benefit of consumers.

It is recalled that initially the combination of higher speeds and lower prices had provoked reactions from the competition, with alternative providers expressing concerns about compression of the profit margins by the dominant provider (margin squeeze).

However, in addition to the management of OTE, which has launched specific moves and is doing the right thing, the managements of Vodafone, Wind and Nova also recognize, according to the relevant statements of their leaders, the need to increase landline connection speeds, as the country has very low performance.

OTE's initiative to upgrade speeds for free to its subscribers (for example, whoever has VDSL 50 today will be upgraded to VDSL 100 and whoever has a 24-bit program will be upgraded to 50-bit) was announced on December 15 2021 and has already begun to be implemented.

It is a condition that it is technologically possible, while the OTE subscribers do not need to take any action.
