In the last two months, the Starlink has expanded, offering its services in more ways than ever before. As more and more people subscribe to its service, the network naturally becomes a bit more strained and congested. Now it seems that the Starlink implements a way to combat network congestion by creating a data cap.
In accordance with The Verge, the service Starlink will now have one data cap since December. Next month, residential customers will start with one 1TB data “stock”. which will be characterized as “access priority". Access priority data will be used whenever there is internet access during the hours 7 am until 11 p.m. Once this data is used up, users will experience slower data speeds during peak hours.
The next data “stock” will be replenished at the beginning of each month and customers will be able to purchase priority access data, but it will cost 25 minutes per GB.
For the most part, this shouldn't really affect many customers, as Starlink states that less than 10% of its users actually manage to consume this data cap each month. In addition to the new data cap, the company will also expand its service to more parts of Alaska, as well as Canada, focusing primarily on the northern regions. For the areas not yet covered, h Starlink has plans to expand to more regions in the first part of 2023.
