The world has completely changed her July 1, 1979, the day the Sony launched the first Walkman her.
Το TPS-L2 was the first truly portable music player which would bring about one of those revolutions that no one could have expected or predicted.
Not that portable music devices were not in circulation at the time as well radios and radio cassette players were known to mankind. But it was Walkman what made it accessible and mostly private to listen to music away from home, essentially ushering in an entire era of people walking the streets with headphones.
Forty years later, the Walkman has naturally gone out of fashion, only that its impact on society continues to exist and be more apparent than ever. Neither cassettes nor CD we hear now, we carry mobile devices that store tens of thousands of songs and stream even more from the internet, only they all follow in the footsteps of Walkman.
He was the one who launched the idea of transferring music wherever you go, without even having to submit others to your own musical tastes. They called it the Walkman and it was the first device ever designed exclusively for it, a simple product with great ambitions.
According the photographic history of the device provided by Sony, the first Walkman was even maligned and ridiculed for not being able to write tapes.
Its small revolution, however, was the feature of the 3.5mm double jacks (which until recently were used even in the most advanced audio devices), allowing the tape to be played with a friend.
The Walkman would know countless improvements and modifications in the years to come. The younger generations would also know it as Discman, playing CDs first and MiniDisc later, gradually giving way to modern Sony media players.
Without the Walkman though to change our musical habits and to pave the ground, none of the current technological revolutions would be possible…
