That's it Proton project is a tool of hers Valve Software which allows games made for Windows to run on Linux via Steam.
TThe project started in 2018 and is based (fork) on WINE (a compatibility layer), with some additional features such as DirectX via Vulcan. According to the database ProtonDB, which lists compatible games, there are currently over 6.500 games that work flawlessly, without configuration, on Linux.
It's a an impressive achievement for gaming in the Linux community, which surpasses any other attempt to transfer games to a Linux environment in the past. At the current rate it appears that over 100 games a month are supported by Proton with a quality that is constantly increasing.
In the first 1.000 popular Steam games, 67% run perfectly on Linux with some tweaks, for which there are complete instructions in the ProtonDB database.
