The 5G is the future, however both mobile phone providers and manufacturers are not yet ready to welcome it.
ΑInevitably, global smartphone sales show a significant decline compared to previous years.
Smartphone sales reached their zenith in 2016, but have been declining gradually since then, according to IDC. This decline is due to various factors, such as the US-China trade war, the new trend of consumers to keep their old smartphones for more years and the fact that the market is now saturated, as the vast majority of consumers already own their a smartphone.
The spread of 5G is expected to have beneficial effects on the smartphone market, however, according to IDC, this fact alone is not enough to reverse the negative climate. Although some 5G Android devices have already been released, Apple has not yet entered the dance. However, it is extremely likely that in 2020 we will see the first 5G iPhones. Last week, Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm, said that his company and Apple are working feverishly to release a 5G iPhone as soon as possible.
However, IDC predicts that sales of smartphones will reach 1.48 billion units in 2023 and will exceed -even marginally- sales in 2016.
