Nokia 9 PureView: unveiled today at MWC 2019 in Barcelona

The long wait for the Nokia 9 PureView is over, as it was unveiled today at the MWC in Barcelona, and professional and enthusiastic photographers will surely be pleased.

ΑBut before we focus on the PureView camera, let's look at what the whole phone is made of.

Well, it's almost all covered with glass, with double glazing to be precise and a metal frame that holds them together, and it's no surprise that HMD chose to release the device with the timeless glass body. The Nokia 9 is also IP67 certified for dust and water resistance.

There is a 5.99 ″ P-OLED front screen, compatible with HDR10, and with a resolution of 2.880 x 1.440 pixels or QHD +. The glass with Gorilla 5 keeps the OLED screen safe from cracks and scratches.

Nokia has chosen a fingerprint scanner below the screen, which is the latest trend from almost all manufacturers, but you can also use AI-driven Face Unlock if you wish.

Strange as it may seem, HMD has chosen the Snapdragon 845 chipset for the Nokia 9, which is a bit outdated, and not the Snapdragon 855, which is the latest and highest in performance and capabilities. We assume that Nokia has worked hard and for a long time to optimize the camera algorithms, which use all the basic chip components - CPU, GPU, ISP, DSP - and it may not have been possible to immediately upgrade to a Snapdragon 855. Nokia PureView 9 is not one of the most expensive flagship smartphones on the market.

The Nokia 9 PureView will be available in a single color - Midnight Blue - and in a single version - 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage that will also be expandable via SD cards.

And now, let's look at the new PureView camera.

There are five 12MP cameras on the back, and all have a Zeiss f / 1.8 lens. Two of them are RGB (color) and the other three are monochrome. There is also a sixth ToF camera - for additional depth information. There is also a dual tone LED flash, and it is the last thing you will see on the back of the device.

These five camera lenses have the same fixed focal length of 28mm. You won't find ultra-wide-angle lenses, and the Nokia 9 has no fancy shooting features. The PureView was never intended to be the most versatile smartphone camera in the world, but to offer excellent image quality as well as an expensive DSLR camera. How can he do that?

The phone combines images from all five 12MP cameras into a single image with impressive dynamic range - up to 12,4 light stops, which is the size of a large camera. Overall, Nokia Pureview promises unparalleled depth-of-field detection and spectacular dynamic range.

Nokia 9 is also optimized for those who like to edit photos in RAW format.

Nokia has also partnered with Google to identify and support photos taken with Nokia 9's five cameras. Google Photos will be able to adjust the focus after taking the photo to adjust the bokeh size, and it will be able to display full size RAW files - which are DNG.

Thanks to the large number of camera sensors and the ToF camera, Nokia states that we see much more realistic bokeh in the photos, and with reduced noise. Depth information is stored in the photo, and Google Photos will allow you to change the amount of depth after the photo was taken.

Nokia 9 also supports higher shutter speeds in the dark (up to 10 seconds). It also supports full manual control, so that all professional and enthusiastic photographers can have full control of the settings they need.

In terms of video recording, this is not so exciting, as it supports up to 4K HDR video at 30fps.

Nokia 9 also has a Selfie camera at 20MP f / 1.8 with front view. It supports Binning Tetracell so that in low light conditions it can combine four adjacent pixels into one, and produce 5MP images with less noise.

Nokia 9 will be released with Android One (Pie version), and will have fast and timely updates.

Finally, the Nokia 9 will have a 3.320 mAh battery. It supports fast wired charging (QC3 and USB PD) as well as 10 W wireless charging. However, there is no audio jack on the Nokia 9.

Now, let's talk about pricing. The Nokia 9 does not have the advanced Snapdragon 855, probably due to the complexity of the camera, but it seems that HMD has taken this into account - and the Nokia 9 PureView is priced at $ 699 - significantly cheaper than the flagships recently introduced by other manufacturers. .

Nokia 9 will have limited production. Once you run out of stock, Nokia may not produce any more devices. The company has not revealed how many units it will produce.

Maybe we'll see a Nokia 9.1 with Snapdragon 855 chip before time runs out, maybe not. It will probably depend on the success of this PureView.
