Lu Weibing: Explains the Problems of Building a 5G Smartphone - Not Just an Addition of a 5G Modem

The Vice President of the Group Xiaomi and General Manager of Redmi, Lu Weibing presented in detail all the problems related to the construction of one 5G smartphones.

ΌAs Lu Weibing said, building a 5G smartphone is not as simple as adding a 5G modem. Requires a systematic redesign of the platform, device structure, heat dissipation and antennas.

With the use of more and more integrated circuits, the total number of components has increased to more than 500. The area occupied by these components on the motherboard (PCB) has also increased by about 20%. So imagine how difficult it will be to add a lot of extra accessories needed for 5G in Smartphones.

There are currently 4 sets of conventional antennas on a 4G smartphone, including 2/3 / 4G antennas on both ends of the device, a triple antenna to support GPS / Wi-Fi / Bluetooth and an additional standalone antenna again for Wi -Fi.

Additionally if the phone also supports NFC, we need to add an extra antenna for this purpose.

In the new smartphones with 5G support, the number of antennas should be increased immediately to more than 12 groups of antennas. In addition to the existing antennas to support 4G, manufacturers need to add several antenna sets for the 5G band.

The increase in the number of antennas has inevitably led to larger gaps within a Smartphone, and these should not only ensure the correct placement of the antennas for 5G, but at the same time should ensure the overall structural strength of the frames after their placement, so that there are no failures later.

All of the above put all Smartphone designers to a great test to ensure the structural strength of the devices in the best way.

5G networks require the use of an extremely large network bandwidth, which consumes more power during High Speed Download. This results in higher power consumption, which increases by 50% -100% compared to traditional smartphones with 4G support.

At the same time, because the temperatures in the circuits increase dramatically, a simple cooling circuit will not be able to withstand these heats. This is why most 5G smartphones will necessarily have to use a liquid cooling system.

Of course in a 5G Smartphone, the most important "component" is the processor. The Redmi K30 5G will "wear" the latest generation of 5G processors in the world. In addition to the MediaTek Dimensity 1000, a variant of the device will wear the Snapdragon 765G SoC which is Qualcomm's latest 5G SoC.
