The Samsung released an update via OTA, for Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 +, which improves the performance of the fingerprint sensor.
Η update was released yesterday as an emergency update, which made it appear as a pop-up on the screen. The update is displayed by the application Galaxy Store and not from the usual software update channel and is rather small in size just 6,9MB. The update upgrades the software immediately without the need to restart the device.
The pop-up mentioned that this particular upgrade was one biometric security patch for the fingerprint sensor. It also seems to be only for the Galaxy S10 and S10 + as the Galaxy S10e did not receive it. This should come as no surprise as the S10 and S10 + have an ultrasonic sensor built into their display, while the S10e has a standard capacitive fingerprint sensor on its side.
Users who installed the update noticed a huge improvement in the performance of the fingerprint sensor. Prior to the update, the sensor was slow and unreliable. However, the update has made the response almost instantaneous and also works reliably in multiple attempts to unlock the device.
We are not sure what else has changed with the sensor and if there are also safety benefits. A report from last week showed that the fingerprint sensor in Galaxy S10 could be fooled by a fingerprint 3D and we can not say for sure if Samsung has addressed this issue (or if it can).
