To better understand how Xiaomi has succeeded "Disappear" the Selfie camera below the screen of Mi Mix 4, today the company published an official article, in which it analyzes the way in which this "works" CUP technology.

Τthe new MIX 4 of Xiaomi officially released on August 10 in China and is the first Smartphone of the company that makes use of it CUP full screen technology for the front Selfie camera, which is hidden under the screen.

As informed by Xiaomi, for the research and development of this technology, proceeded to an investment of 500 million yuan and it took 2 years to complete.

Η Xiaomi emphasizes that the mission of the series We MIX is to explore and adapt all the technological innovations that are available in every era. So from the first generation of devices in the series We MIX, Xiaomi has managed to lead the whole industry to Smatrphones that offer the "full screen" experience, testing new technologies such as the full ceramic body (COF), the sliding design to hide the Selfie camera, the screen that covers the whole body of the device (Mi Mix Alpha), the folding screen (My Mix Fold) and many other revolutionary innovations.

This time, the new Mi MIX 4 by Xiaomi, is equipped with the third generation CUP flexible screen, which enhances the feeling of a full screen experience to an unprecedented degree, while it disappears at the same time the front Selfie camera that is now mounted below the screen.

To better understand how Xiaomi has succeeded in eliminating the Selfie camera under the screen, today the company published an official article that analyzes how this CUP technology "works".

Xiaomi in 2020 had presented us with the first TV that was equipped with a transparent screen. To make this possible, the company built a screen on which it had rearranged the way the Pixels were placed, while optimizing the material of the screen substrate.

And in the new CUP technology created by Xiaomi, the same basic principles are applied that are necessary to increase the light transmittance from the screen panel, so that it is possible to hide the Selfie camera under the screen.

All of today's flexible OLED screens have a degree of permeability that makes them transparent to some degree, which is why OLED screens can be fitted with a fingerprint sensor below the screen. Remember that the fingerprint sensor under the screen is essentially a camera sensor.

The downside is that the transparency of the OLED screen alone is not enough to meet the needs of a Selfie camera.

So in order for Xiaomi to make it easier for light to pass under the screen and reach the sensor of the front Selfie camera, it first had to move the TFT circuit under the pixels, which block light, and carry it outside this CUP area where the Selfie camera will be located, in order to create the necessary vacuum needed to pass a large amount of light to the camera sensor.

We can imagine this special CUP area as an "eye" with its "daughter" in the middle, where a large amount of light can pass.

To increase light transmission, the gap between the pixels should be widened, and the individual sub-pixels should be reduced in size without changing the RGB ratio of the pixels. This special CUP area on the screen should continue to work as well as the rest of it, but now the Pixels in this area, in addition to being small in size, have been modified into a round shape to reduce the diffraction effect when light passes through this CUP point of the screen.

After reducing the pixel size and removing the TFT driver circuit, the lead wire circuit between the pixels changed to Indium Tin Oxide (ITO). This is a special transparent wire that further increases light transmission.

With all the above construction interventions that Xiaomi made in this CUP area of the screen, under which the Selfie camera will be housed, it managed to increase up to 5 times the light transmittance that the OLED screen has by itself.

But no one can defy the laws of physics even after all these interventions have been made. So far, even this new CUP technology has applied to Mi Mix 4 η Xiaomi, is not capable of completely eliminating the diffraction of light, nor is it possible to make the screen 100% transparent.

So the front camera below the screen that the new one has Mi Mix 4 still needs to use special software algorithms to optimize the image to compensate for the reduced amount of incoming light entering the Selfie camera sensor.

This algorithm with which it is equipped Mi MIX 4, continuously calibrates the color temperature of the Selfie camera below the screen so that there are no serious deviations, and as soon as the user takes a photo, the algorithm applies the Multi-frame HDR, to reduce noise and blur photos.

The new flexible CUP screen which has it Mi MIX 4 It took many years of research and development, and over sixty patents to create one that achieves the result it has today, but it is not enough for those who want their device to take the most perfect selfie photos and videos possible.
