Η Samsung Electronics, world leader in advanced memory technology, announced the mass production of mobile DRAM with the highest capacity.
Η new mobile DRAM is the first 4X in size industry 12-gigabyte (GB), low power, dual data speed (LPDDR4X) - optimized for tomorrow's premium smartphones. With a higher capacity than most ultra-slim notebooks, the new mobile DRAM will allow users to make the most of all the features of a next-generation smartphone.
"With the launch of mass production of the new LPDDR4X, Samsung is completing a full line of advanced memory products that will enhance the new era of smartphones, including storage solutions from 12GB mobile DRAM to 512GB eUFS 3," said Sewon Chun, Executive Vice President of Memory Marketing by Samsung Electronics. "In addition, with LPDDR4X, we are strengthening our position as a manufacturer of premium mobile memory in order to effectively serve the rapidly growing demand of smartphone manufacturers worldwide."
Thanks to 12GB mobile DRAM, smartphone makers can maximize the capabilities of devices with more than five cameras, ever-increasing screen size as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G functions. With the new 12GB DRAM, smartphone users can perform many tasks simultaneously and seamlessly, search faster, navigate effortlessly between numerous applications, on very large screens of higher resolution. Also, its slim design (only 1.1 mm) serves the elegant, simple design of smartphones.
The 12GB capacity was achieved with the combination of six (6) LPDDR4X chips, 16-gigabit each, based on the second generation processing of 10nm (1y-nm), in a single package, freeing up more space for the smartphone battery. In addition, using Samsung's 1y-nm technology, the new 12GB mobile memory ensures data transfer speeds of up to 34.1GB per second, while reducing the inevitable increase in power consumption caused by the boost of DRAM capacity.
Since the release of 1GB mobile DRAM in 2011, Samsung continues to lead the developments in the mobile DRAM market, with the introduction of 6GB mobile DRAM in 2015, 8GB in 2016 and the introduction of the first 12GB LPDDR4X. From the state-of-the-art memory production line in Korea, Samsung plans to more than triple the supply of 8GB and 12GB mobile DRAMs based on 1y-nm, in the second half of 2019 to meet the expected high demand.
