Google Play: Search finds 2000+ malicious applications in the Google Store.

This is evidenced by research from the University of Sydney and CSIRO, which found that 2040 applications either contain malware or require the user to share much more than they should.

These applications include many copies of popular titles such as Temple Run, Hill Climb Racing etc. In the first stage of the research, neural networks were used to examine all the applications of the store based on their logos and descriptions. This audit identified 49608 "fake" applications.

These applications were then checked by VirusTotal to see if they contained malware and it was found that 7426 of them were indeed malicious code, with 2040 being considered "high risk".

Since the research was published, only 35% of the applications found have been removed from the store and it remains to be seen what will happen to the rest.
