Η Xiaomi recorded an annual increase of 42% according to IDC data, for the first time surpassing Apple sales, ranking third in the world.
Η global smartphone market shows signs of recovery. According IDC investigation, global smartphone sales exceeded 353 million in the third quarter of 2020, slightly less than the levels recorded a year ago.
Some manufacturers have recovered more than others. It was a positive quarter for Samsung. Although it grew by just 2,9% year-on-year, it was enough to regain the lead in the smartphone market from Huawei. The Korean company sold 80,4 million units for a market share of 22,7%. Both Canalys and Counterpoint ranked Samsung as the leading smartphone maker in the third quarter of 2020 as Huawei continues to decline.
The Chinese company's struggles with the USA are aggravated by sales reductions in China! Once the stronghold of Huawei, the company saw a 15% drop in sales in China, according to IDC. Canalys data also show that Huawei's shipments fell by 25% year-on-year in Europe.
Xiaomi's rise continues
While Huawei is still in second place globally, Xiaomi is threatening to topple it. Xiaomi posted 42% year-on-year growth with IDC data, surpassing Apple's sales for the first time. It has a market share of 13,1% worldwide. This record increase is remarkable considering it was down two million units from fifth in the category Vivo before the pandemic. This growth was boosted by the recovery of production capacity in India, reflecting the company's performance in that country as well.
The delayed release of the iPhone 12 series did not help Apple in the third quarter of 2020. IDC reports that the company, now in fourth place, sold five million fewer units from year to year, an annual decline of almost 11%. Both Counterpoint and IDC expect the company to recover as soon as its new sales flagship launches.
BBK is also growing
The rest of the positions in the world ranking are mainly from BBK companies. THE Vivo saw a slight increase in smartphone sales year-over-year and maintains its fifth position globally, according to IDC. Counterpoint disputes this, placing Oppo in fifth place.
Either way, it suggests that companies are separated by a 1% market share. According to reports, Realme will have another increase in the third quarter of 2020. Counterpoint reports that the company saw the strongest growth among OEMs globally, with a 132% increase in sales from quarter to quarter.
The research company ranks it seventh in the world. OnePlus recorded a 96% quarterly increase due to its performance in India and Western Europe.
