The GPU of AMD is quite popular in the world of computers, and it seems that the company will expand its presence in Smartphones, announcing that it has licensed GPUs to Samsung.
ΑThis means that in the future, there is a good chance that Samsung will integrate AMD GPU technology into the next smartphones to be released.
Samsung is using ARM MALI on Exynos chipsets, which means that this licensing agreement with AMD will be a blow to ARM, which recently announced the new MALI GPU architecture.
According to Forbes, it is not clear whether Samsung's decision to go with AMD was due to their frustration with the new MALI architecture or whether they hope that working with AMD will help it stand out from other companies.
It should be noted that this is not the first AMD invasion with Smartphone GPUs. The company had its own GPU division specifically for Smartphones called Imageon, which it sold to Qualcomm in 2009. This resulted in the creation of Qualcomm Adreno, which are on the company's Snapdragon chipsets.
As stated by Samsung…. "We are preparing for technology reshuffles and looking for new opportunities. Our partnership with AMD will allow us to bring innovative products and graphics solutions to the market for tomorrow's Smartphones. We look forward to working with AMD to accelerate innovation in Smartphone graphics technology, which will also help develop laptops to the next level.".
NVIDIA had also tried to enter the Smartphone scene with the Tegra chipsets, but it did not have the sequel that everyone would have expected. AMD may be doing well in this area, but it 's probably too early to see how this partnership will affect Samsung phones in terms of performance, so we'll have to wait to see the first implementations.
