Η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή publishes (tomorrow, November 7) the first call for proposals WiFi4EU, which will enable 2800 municipalities in Europe to install WiFi networks in public areas.
Three more calls will follow over the next two years and a total of € 120 million will be made available to 8000 municipalities across the EU by 2020, the Commission said in a statement.
It is noted that the funded by the program WiFi4EU networks will be free, ad-free and will not collect personal data.
The application process is simple and fully electronic. After registering in the special portal WiFi4EU, municipalities will be able to apply online for the € 15.000 voucher for the program WiFi4EU, with a single click. So far, more than one in five municipalities across Europe have registered their data on the dedicated WiFi4EU portal (link is external). Those municipalities that have not registered and wish to do so can apply for a coupon, until the start of the invitation on November 7. With the coupon, the municipality will be able to install a Wi-Fi access point in public places, such as town halls, public libraries, museums, public parks or squares. The Commission selects projects based on the order of expression of interest.
In the next call, the first 2800 municipalities will get a WiFi4EU coupon, while ensuring that each EU Member State will receive at least 15 coupons.
Over the next two years, three more WiFi4EU invitations will be published, about once every six months.
