Under Display cameras: We will be a little longer to see them, and that is why.

We recently saw the original Smartphones with the new ones Selfie cameras to be found below the screen, and developed by Oppo and Xiaomi

ΠSo the fact that these videos were short in duration and had a low resolution, managed to excite us, as they offered us a glimpse into the future, where Full Screen Smartphones will be the norm.

All of these may seem close, but we probably will not see them implemented this year.

Although the prototypes we saw were in an advanced stage of development, it seems that the technology itself will still need some time to mature before it can be ready for mass production of devices with these features.

According to Ice Universe (on Twitter), we will not see any device with a camera under the screen released this year, as companies are now focusing on improving existing solutions.

The dimensions of the camera lens and sensors will continue to shrink until they reach a diameter of about 1 mm. This is supposed to happen in the next "1-2 years". From what it sounds like, for example the Galaxy Note 10, it is rumored that it will have a smaller diameter Selfie camera, and below 5mm.

New technology with Under_Display cameras is one of the biggest challenges for smartphone makers in recent years.

The idea itself is nothing new - as we saw it implemented in much the same way on the Galaxy S10, but there were other related patents over a decade ago. The challenge here is not in the submission of the idea, but in the way of its implementation.

Technology constraints have so far halted the development of on-screen cameras for consumer devices, but as technology evolves and manufacturing prices fall, companies are now beginning to explore new technologies.

The cameras below the screen for fingerprint detectors work with about the same technology.

An optical fingerprint scanner is basically a CMOS camera sensor mounted below the screen, but it is very different from a selfie camera.

The fingerprint scanner does not require a lens, and is designed to capture images of your fingers being pressed against the screen, at a distance of no more than one millimeter from the sensor itself.

A Selfie camera, however, needs a lens, and it should be able to capture crystal clear images at a distance of a few centimeters to infinity, which is why it is difficult to implement them under a screen.

A smart way to make this possible is to have a dual screen function as opposed to a camera lens. That's what Xiaomi did to its own prototype camera under the screen, and it's a smart solution. To achieve this, Xiaomi made the OLED screen transparent where the Selfie camera is located.

So when the camera is not in use, the screen at that point normally functions as a plain screen and displays content, but when the camera is turned on, this part of the screen becomes transparent and begins to function as a lens.

This can only be achieved on OLED screens, and this is an additional constraint for the industry to adopt the technology on a larger scale.

One of the major challenges in designing a camera under the screen is to ensure that it can capture high quality images because the transparent screen cannot be compared to a real, convex camera lens.

However, Xiaomi promises perfect focus and clear photos, even better than the cameras we have now, and while this is an interesting claim from Xiaomi, we cross our arms for the time being, and wait for the first samples of it to be presented to us. of the realization and the promise it gives us.

We will see and believe soon some samples of photos and videos from this new technology, and then we will judge whether Xiaomi's promise has been fulfilled or not.
