One was found fake application designed to trick users into believing it to be the original version Faceapp, in order to 'infect their victims with a adware module called MobiDash.
Αcoma a popular app has taken over Social Media. In this age where users adopt a fashion because it is fun or just trendy, the FOMO ((Fear Of Messing Out), that is, the fear of losing trends can overshadow basic security habits - such as licensing control required by an application.
In a recent survey, we found that the majority (63%) of consumers do not read licenses at all and 43% simply tick all privacy rights when installing an application. Although the research was conducted 3 years ago, it is a given that the findings on users' digital habits remain similar.
Η Kaspersky has detected a fake app designed to trick users into believing it to be the original version of Faceapp, in order to 'infect their victims with an adware module called MobiDash. Once you download this application from unofficial sources and install it, it intentionally presents an "error" and is automatically deleted. Then a malicious module of the application remains discreetly on the device, displaying ads.
According to her data Kaspersky, more than 500 unique users have reported the problem in the last 2 days, with the first report being recorded on July 7th. After research on the malicious application, more than 800 modules were detected.
As he said Igor Golovin, Kaspersky Security Researcher.
We urge users not to download applications from unofficial sources and to install security solutions on their devices to avoid damage
In fact, there is nothing harmful about getting users involved online challenges or install new applications. Danger lurks when users give applications unrestricted access to contacts, photos, personal messages, and personal files in general. This move allows app developers, even legitimate ones, to access data that must remain private. Once this sensitive data has been hacked or misused, a popular application can become a gateway through which hackers can exploit and spread malicious viruses.
We are constantly trying to prevent this situation in Kaspersky. We suggest that internet users be constantly on the alert and be more careful about what they do on Internet and the connected devices they use.
Some key contributions can be made:
- Download applications only from trusted sources and always read reviews and comments on anything you download.
- Choose wisely the applications you want to install.
- Read the license carefully.
- Always be careful with the licenses you grant to applications.
- Avoid simply clicking "next" during the installation process.
- Install a security solution on all your connected devices.
