This is not the first time we have heard of it in recent years, but it seems we are very close to the return of the removable batteries for almost all categories of electronic products, including of course smartphones.
Σaccording to the consortium Right to repair (consists of several European agencies), the European Parliament supports the return of removable batteries so that they can be easily replaced in electronic devices to further extend their life and further protect the environment.
If the story reminds you of something you are not wrong, after a draft law was submitted to the EU in 2020 which would oblige all manufacturers to release devices with removable batteries. However, it was never put to a final vote to proceed with its implementation.
As he says Right to repair, the support of the European Parliament is important, but the issue should be discussed at the European Council of Heads of 27 EU Member States on 17 March 2022. If approved by the latter, then there is a possibility that it will pass as a bill in 2022 and will be implemented by theJanuary 1, 2024. Electronics makers will have a grace period 12-24 months in order to comply.
Do you realize that such an eventuality will bring ups and downs not only in the category of smartphones, but in general in the entire market of electronic devices and electric vehicles (yes, it applies to them as well).
Who knows, maybe 2025 to have a foldable iPhone with a removable battery…
