The European Parliament gave the go-ahead for new rules on battery replacement technologies, which could cause headaches (mostly) for smartphone makers
The agency published the summary of this environmentally conscious and sustainable strategy on 14 June:
With 587 votes in favor, nine against and 20 abstentions, MEPs approved the agreement reached with the Council on the revision of EU rules on batteries and battery waste.
The new law takes into account technological developments and future challenges in the sector and will cover the entire life cycle of batteries, from design to end of life.
The mobile battery division (for smartphones, tablets and camerass) describes new consumer rights, with a requirement for easily removable and replaceable (DIY) items. Smartphone makers, including market leaders Apple and Samsung, will have to go back to the drawing board and find ways to reshape the way their batteries are placed and connected internally.
Many devices have their modules sealed behind protective layers, requiring specialized tools and varying levels of user experience to access and remove safely. The European Council has more work to do after announcing its launch:
These provisional decisions are believed to come into force on principles of 2027, but it is also envisaged that large companies could apply for extensions beyond that date.
