Four models MacBook Air from 2013/14 and a 2014 MacBook Pro are now considered vintage products, which means that support is not guaranteed.
ΤApple laptops are not very cheap. Therefore, those who buy them expect to use them a few years before they need to upgrade. However, the company lets only a few years pass before re-evaluating its older models and characterizing them as "vintage products".
According MacRumors report, this week, the following MacBook Air and MacBook Pro were added to the list of vintage products:
- MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013)
- AcMacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013)
- MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014)
- AcMacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014)
- AcMacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2014)
In addition to the MacBooks, the list also includes the 5th generation iPod touch, which Apple stopped producing on July 15, 2015.
When a product is included in the list of vintage, then the support it is entitled to changes. Specifically, Apple reports how a vintage product still receives support in the Genius Bars of its stores or through Authorized Service Agents. But the support "depends on the legislation and the availability of the stock". In other words, it is not guaranteed.
The addition of the above devices to the list of vintage products is not surprising. Apple has always had the policy of re-evaluating its products and classifying them as vintage, in case they have not been sold within five years. After seven years, vintage products are classified as "obsolete". This means that spare parts are not available, nor can anyone order them through Apple.
The five vintage MacBooks may have more users than expected as they were the latest models before Apple's awful re-design with the butterfly keyboard. The good news is that this design has been abandoned on the latest MacBook models.
